What is and what are the characteristics of hydroterapy?
Hydrotherapy, derives from the Greek words hydro: water and therapia: healing.
In simple terms hydrotherapy as a modality (application of a physical agent to biological tissues in order to obtain therapeutic changes), based on the use of a great variety of equipment and accessories in the water, making it a comfortable and conducive means for treatment of users with neurological, orthopedic and rheumatic alterations, among others.
Facilitates the execution of movements with less effort, providing the possibility of assisting or resisting it. Allows the relaxation and the decrease of the pain at the same time that it favors the socialization and it promotes psychological effects beneficial for the person.
What is and what are the characteristics of aquatic therapy?
Aquatic therapy is the therapeutic procedure (a way to produce changes through the application of clinical services or techniques in order to improve the function and usually requires the participation of the user), resulting from the combined use of aquatic means, techniques, models of rehabilitation and exercises in the water.
Designed by a qualified professional with health focus, approaching it in an individualized or group way, in order to produce in the person curative and recreational effects that facilitate the functionality, adherence to the treatment and achievement of the objectives proposed for the same, taking advantage of the thermal and mechanical properties it possesses.
In this way, aquatic therapy goes beyond integrating movements, favoring improvements in pain, circulation, muscle strength, balance and coordination of those people who have their pool in their home just for fun or reduce the heat.
So… What are the benefits of hydroterapy, aquatic therapy and pool physical exercise?
Hydrotherapy, aquatic therapy and aquatic exercises generate several benefits in all systems of the human body, but to expose it in an orderly and academic way, we will divide them into 5 large groups:

When we immerse ourselves in a pool, the force of pushing the water (Archimedes’ Principle) reduces our weight, i.e. a person who is immersed in the pool up to shoulder height, weighing 100 kilos, will have a “weight apparent of 10 kilos”, which will allow you to move more freely, feeling lighter and reducing the load on your joints.
On the other hand, if physical exercise, the tactile stimulus of water plus the temperature of the water, are considered to generate heat release, naturally occurring substances (endorphin, serotonin and dopamine) and blocking painful receptors, which lead to elimination of discomfort and body aches (spine, knees, hips, neck, among others) and also, is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia.
2.- With aquatic therapy strengthens muscles, tendons and postures.
When performing well-prescribed physical exercise in an aquatic environment (swimming pool, sea, rivers and lakes) generates totally different changes, that when performing a gym training; because about 650 muscles of your body work in a differentiated way, without generating an excessive overload in your skeletal muscle system, which could cause an injury (tearing, sprain, rupture of a tendon).
Then, depending on the type of exercise and according to your goals, you can tone your arms, thighs, calves and buttocks or generate muscle hypertrophy (increase in muscle size); in both cases, having strengthened muscles, improve your posture, some orthopedic problems such as scoliosis, kyphosis, flat foot, scapular dyskinesia and other conditions that affect postmenopausal women and older adults.
3.- With aquatic therapy, you can reduce adipose tissue, fat and related diseases.
If a pool exercise prescription is made, considering different user indicators, comorbidities (existing diseases) and physical capacity, it is possible to lose about 3 to 5 kilos of fat or fat tissue in a period of 3 months, it is like doing a liposuction at much lower cost, but exchanging muscle for fat.
In addition, by reducing adipose tissue, lipid levels in the blood and those deposited in our arteries, such as total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides, are favored.
